Smoothies: Perfect on a Hot Summer Day!

The Healthy Alternative

There’s nothing like a smoothie to refresh you on a hot summer’s day. Imagine it’s unbearably hot and you can’t sit still. The temperature outside feels like it could melt the asphalt on the road. You look into your kitchen to get something to drink. Let’s see you have some fruits, some yogurt and some ice. Now what do you with these? You can use these ingredients to make a smoothie that will have you sitting down on your porch swing, cool and refreshed even if everyone else is sweating.

What’s a smoothie? A smoothie is like a milkshake except that it doesn’t have ice cream, an essential ingredient of the milkshake. The smoothie is said to be the healthier alternative because its primary ingredient is usually a fruit. It can be frozen fruit or even fresh fruit. There are smoothies that are made from only one kind of fruit and some smoothies are made from a combination of several fruits. This fruit base is combined with yogurt and crushed ice and blended well. It looks like a milkshake and is also cold and usually takes the color of the fruit base.

The smoothie was first manufactured in the 60’s because of the health food trend that came up. They were healthy alternatives to carbonated drinks and health food stores started to sell them. It was a good alternative to milkshake for vegetarians and vegans alike. As the years passed, the smoothie became a permanent fixture in coffee shops and cafes, as well as groceries and supermarkets.

Smoothies have a thick, milk shake like consistency because of the frozen yogurt that is used in it. If you don’t want yogurt, you can use a banana and it will also come out thick and a little firmer than slush. Sometimes you can put some honey in it to sweeten the smoothie if you used citrus fruits as your fruit base. Smoothies now come in pre bottled form and can be bought at a reasonable price.
